Sami Mäkeläinen is a strategic foresight leader specializing in ethical AI governance and the future of emerging technologies. He began his career in online commerce and mobile technology at Nokia before founding Telstra’s Strategic Foresight practice, where he focused on emerging technology trends that impact global industries.

Currently, Sami is the founder of Transition Level, an Australia-based consulting firm that draws inspiration from aviation to navigate the complex transitions of the 21st century. Just as the “transition level” in aviation is a critical altitude where aircraft adjust their instruments for a shared understanding and safe ascent, Transition Level helps organizations calibrate their strategies to safely ascend into higher levels of automation and technological advancement.

Sami is also affiliated with the Institute for the Future, the world’s leading futures organization, is a Senior Industry Fellow at RMIT FORWARD, and serves on the steering committee for the University of Melbourne’s Centre for AI and Digital Ethics (CAIDE). With a global perspective, Sami assists organizations in preparing for the future and adapting to rapid technological shifts. His expertise lies in integrating generative AI, foresight, and strategic planning to enhance organizational resilience and innovation. His current research interests include the impact of automation on skill degradation, complex systems, and architecting for resilience.
