Toby Walsh is an ARC Laureate Fellow and Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW Sydney, where he also serves as Chief Scientist of UNSW.AI, the university’s campus-wide AI Institute. He was named by The Australian as one of the “rock stars” of Australia’s digital revolution.
A globally recognised expert in artificial intelligence, Toby is a leading advocate for the responsible development and governance of AI to ensure it improves our lives. He has spoken on these issues at the United Nations, to heads of state, parliamentary bodies, company boards, and other influential audiences worldwide. His advocacy has included a particular focus on the military uses of AI, which led to him being “banned indefinitely” from Russia.
Toby is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and was named on the international Who’s Who in AI list of influencers. His many honours include the prestigious Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science, the Humboldt Prize, and the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellence in Engineering and ICT.
A prolific author and public communicator, Toby has written five books on AI for a general audience, including The Shortest History of AI: Six Ideas Are All You Need to Know and Faking It: Artificial Intelligence in a Human World. He appears regularly on television and radio, has been profiled by The New York Times, and his Twitter account was voted among the top ten to follow for developments in AI.
An in-demand keynote speaker, Toby has presented at major public and industry events including CeBIT, the World Knowledge Forum, TEDx, New Scientist Live, and writers festivals across Australia and internationally, including Adelaide, Bendigo, Bhutan, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, Jaipur, Margaret River, Melbourne, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Sydney, and beyond.
