Liam Mayo

Sensational, personal, uncomfortable, and thought-provoking with a few well-placed curse words summarizes Dr. Liam Mayo’s dynamic presentation on our perceived futures. Throughout Dr. Mayo’s keynote address, I was often drawn back to the teachings I learned in Pema Chödrön’s book, Comfortable with Uncertainty. Change is always present, and certain. We have free agency to choose how we respond, especially to the things completely out of our control. Do it with grace and courtesy. All of these statements kept running through my mind as Dr. Mayo kept serving and spiking. My mind pivoting, and then coming back to center. Mental gymnastics at its finest.

With the ability to not only relate, read, and interact with his audience, Liam strikes fear, hope, and curiosity within the same thought. This is exactly what he speaks to when revealing his own center of balance and organizational compass of complexity, chaos, and contradiction.

The brilliance of keeping his audience on edge as he wound down his first session, to bring it all full circle for a second and final session that offered hope, time to reflect, and maybe had a chance to get a stiff drink while contemplating it all, truly shows the level of professionalism as a sophisticated speaker, but as the true futurist that he is. I recommend just enjoying the show; just don’t get too emotional. P.S. He really, really loves Kevin Bacon.

As we live in a world characterized by division, economic uncertainty and a changing climate it’s challenging to have a positive outlook of the future. Liam helped me understand that the future can be bright. We just need to change our perspective.
